This class will teach you how to pinpoint problem areas quickly, enabling your client to leave pain free. Our main focus is on the classic problem areas of the body: the head and neck, the low back and sacrum, and the shoulders. We will use orthopedic assessment, connective tissue techniques, passive/active stretching, muscle energy techniques, hydrotherapy, cross fiber friction, and self-care strategies to help clients become pain free.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Pete Whitridge is a licensed massage therapist in Florida and an approved provider for the NCBTMB. He is the former Education Director at the Florida School of Massage in Gainesville. He teaches “Myofascial Components of Pain” workshops throughout the Southeast, as well as business building classes. His training as an EMT, a CPR instructor, and 35 years of teaching experience have given him many insights into the learning process. Pete incorporates visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learning aides to provide students with a well-rounded class.

New Weekend Massage Certification Program: Director’s Note

Introducing our new Weekend Massage Certification Program!

Over the past 10 years folks have been asking me for a massage certification program they can attend on the weekends, so I’m thrilled to announce: it’s finally here! To those of you who’ve been wishing for a chance to come to our school even if you live out of town or work during the week, this is for YOU!

The 500-hour weekend program is sleek and stream-lined. We’ve trimmed hours off of our Western Science, Yoga, Self-care, and Business courses in order to fit this program into an 11-month time frame while maintaining a stellar curriculum.

The prospective student this program was designed for can be described by one or more of the following:

  • Anyone interested in becoming a massage therapist who can only attend classes on the weekends
  • Professionals from other health-care fields who are looking for an adjunct career (ex: nutritionists, chiropractors, physical therapists, yoga teachers, personal trainers, etc.)
  • Those with already well established yoga or other self-care practices (Of course, yoga and self-care are not completely excluded from the weekend program. You’ll still enjoy asana in science class to get a real feel for muscular system. Self-care is woven into the massage courses in the form of body mechanics, grounding/centering techniques, and pre-post massage stretches for the therapist and client.)

If the thought of coming to school one or two weekends a month and getting certified as a massage therapist in under a year appeals to you, then please check out our new 500-hour Weekend Massage Certification Program which begins July 2016!

We hope to see you soon.

Warmly,

Shala

Community Volunteer/Networking Opportunity for ASMY Graduates

3rd annual Mother’s Day Event on May 8th in Carrier Park

The event: Mother’s day event for Asheville Active Moms: Healthy Mommies, Happy Babies. For our Mother’s Day Event, local businesses have donated raffle prizes, goody bag items, or will be present after the event to share with us about their business. A photographer will be taking mommy/baby portraits for free after class as well.
It would be such a treat for the moms to have a short massage post class (class is from 9:30 - 10:30). If any of your alumni is interested, they should also bring business cards/flyers to insert in the goody bags! It can be a great opportunity for direct marketing.

The group: Asheville Active Moms: Healthy Mommies, Happy Babies. It is for moms with their stroller aged children. The 60 minute workout includes a warm up, cardio and strength exercises using resistance tubing, and finishing with ab work and a cool down. Our children accompany us in the stroller and are entertained through song and game while we exercise. It is a great workout, but also a great community for moms. Our kids play together after class. We also have mom’s nights out and do quarterly community service.

Student Massage Clinic Starts November 21st

We are booking appointments now for the Student Clinic that begins November 21st. Asheville School of Massage & Yoga offers clinics throughout the year where students who are presently enrolled in our massage therapy program provide massage to the community. This year we have expanded our program and will have availability on Fridays and Saturdays in addition to our regular Thursday times. Appointments are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and we encourage the community to schedule as soon as possible. The work is performed under faculty supervision in the school’s private treatment rooms. We have 6 treatment rooms available making this a great activity for couples or groups to plan together. We offer morning and afternoon appointments to accommodate many schedules. Enjoy the healing benefits of massage while you relax in the beautiful, calming environment of our student treatment rooms.

All massages in the Student Clinic are Integrative massages. This means students draw on what they are learning throughout the program to customize your massage when it is appropriate. They have been working diligently to hone their skills in Swedish massage and will add techniques in Deep-tissue, Pre-natal, Geriatric, Sports, Myofascial Bodywork, Shiatsu, and Thai Massage as the program progresses. Our students value the opportunity to practice their skills and provide the community with a relaxing experience.
