Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years. Spreading to the West as a “sister science” of yoga, it offers tremendous insight into how we can live healthier, more balanced lives.
Through understanding our interconnectedness with Nature, Ayurveda sees each person as a unique combination of the 5 Vedic elements- space, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements come together in different ways to form different body types, personality traits, and tendencies for specific diseases. In this workshop we will discuss how to understand one’s basic constitution and how this information can help us find our unique state of balanced health.
Learning Objectives-
By the end of the weekend, participants will be able to:
- Explain the history, philosophy, fundamental principles and basic vocabulary of Ayurveda.
- Determine which of the 5 elements is predominant in one’s constituition (prakruti) and which element might be causing a health imbalance (vikruti).
- Conduct a dosha (constitutional) assessment.
- Determine the role and influence of the 10 pairs of opposing qualities (gurvadi gunas) in the body.
- Describe the role of agni (digestive fire) and ama (toxins) in maintaining balanced health.
- Implement Ayurvedic self-care practices to balance one’s constitution.
