As you prepare for your final month at ASMY, is there anything you hope to learn or gain in your final month?
“In my final month at ASMY I hope to gain as many new skills as possible … and to also seize each moment to open to the process of self discovery that has continued to unfold for me throughout this entire journey! It has been amazing and I do not take one second for granted!”
“I hope to gain more practice integrating the massage modalities I have learned. It’s fun to find ways for very different styles to come together in one cohesive flow.”
What skills do you find the most rewarding that have enriched your life since attending ASMY?
*Oh gosh … Pripo has proved to be and absolute joy and blessing for me. I love what I have learned in each of the modalities so far. The awakening to my body and physical/body awareness I have gained since attending ASMY … and how this has allowed me to process some emotional stuff from waaaay back has been incredibly enriching to my life! I was a psychotherapist prior to pursuing massage … and I have spent over 20 + years working on myself and helping others with their personal process … and the curriculum at ASMY has been one of the most important and valuable things I have ever done for myself!
*Because I tend to be a left-brained logical person, I don’t know that I would necessarily call this a skill of mine (yet!), but I have appreciated experiencing and trying my hand at the more subtle qualities of massage. Intention, mindfulness, energy work…it comes in many forms, but it’s what the therapist skillfully includes in their practice mentally and emotionally that makes the difference between a good massage and a great massage.
Do you have a favorite class or memory during your time at ASMY?
*Everything I have experienced at ASMY has contributed to beautiful memories. The instructors have been amazing. My classmates are all so unique and amazing. Marion Stone has been with us the most consistently and has had the daunting task of teaching is SO much anatomy and physiology!! She is incredibly patient and so very knowledgeable! I respect her immensely and appreciate her commitment to our learning of this enormous “body” of material! I also love and enjoy beyond words Shala’s energy anatomy class. My absolute all time favorite class of ALL of the ASMY curriculum was when we did the energy anatomy class on (I believe) the fire chakra … and we had blindfolds on while moving to the music. WOW!! It was so amazing and freeing.
Also … daily yoga has been a very important and integral component of our education at ASMY. I feel stronger, healthier, more flexible, and have the body mechanics (because of yoga) to help me stay healthy as I pursue massage as a career.
*I can’t pick a favorite class. Anatomy and Energy Anatomy were probably two of my favorites, along with Deep Tissue and Thai.
Have you made any post massage school plans for your future as a massage therapist, or your future in the school of life?
*I have not “officially” made any plans yet … but UNofficially I am planning on pursuing additional training in lymph drainage massage and working with scar tissue. I have an interest in also increasing my knowledge of Thai, Myofascial Release and Shiatsu. I am looking forward to continuing what ASMY has brought to life in me.
*I don’t have any post-graduation plans set in stone yet, though I have a few ideas. First priority is taking the national exam, of course. Then I will either take some time to travel or pursue further training in Thai…or both! After that I plan to open my own private practice to offer yoga instruction and massage therapy.

“Every day of school at ASMY is a day of real discovery and joy!
Anatomy. Physiology. Somatic Psychology. Mindfulness and Meditation. Yoga. Energy Anatomy. Ethics. And, of course, lots of massage!
And while the school itself is so amazing, I think it’s the people who choose this school over others that continue to make ASMY so unique and special. The largest of all ASMY’s programs, our program of 23 students is proof of ASMY’s success, the great recognition it receives in our community and elsewhere! We have 23 students from Tennessee, Virginia, Michigan, Alaska, St. John, Virgin Islands, as well as, of course, from Asheville and surrounding areas. Despite our wide range of ages, backgrounds, experiences, viewpoints and visions of our futures for healing using yet different modalities, we have one major thing in common-our shared desire and complete commitment to honor ourselves and others. ASMY has offered us many opportunities in a variety of ways to learn be more true to ourselves and more honest with others and to strive to be more present in our lives, first as individuals and then . . . as massage therapists. Only when we can do this can we have the ability to help our clients heal themselves.
To Shala, to all of my incredible teachers, and to all of my beautiful classmates:
All that you are and all that you have taught me and inspired in me will forever remain in my heart, which I will carry with me and share with my clients and with others I meet in my life journey. What a gift!”
Thank you,
Erin Turner

“ASMY has been a place of learning, love and unlimited life lessons. I have received top-notch training in the art and science of massage therapy from highly engaged and knowledgeable professionals. My world has been widened by introductions to a variety of modalities and ways of thinking about the body, mind, and spirit, and I look forward to a lifetime of continued exploration. My classmates have provided encouragement and inspiration, steadily growing into valuable colleagues and friends. I feel enriched academically and prepared professionally, as well as challenged personally to travel my path more confidently, compassionately and peacefully. Thanks again.”
Sincerely,
Sarah S.
“I have been truly impressed with the Asheville School of Massage and Yoga throughout the program. The school and its passionate teachers consistently strive to create the best possible environment for learning and personal growth.
In addition to covering all theoretical and practical aspects necessary for being successful as professional massage therapists, the program balances theory with hands on practice, psychology, yoga, mindfulness and meditation in such a way that it creates a transformative rather than merely educational experience - not only for me. It has been a true joy to watch -and benefit from- my peers growing into the beautiful and self-confident healers they are. The program did a great job teaching new tools and allowing us to “chisel away” old personal patterns that do not serve our needs any longer.
I highly recommend the experience. As my neighbor -who is about to enroll in April 2012- said recently: Asheville School of Massage and Yoga - It’s a Good Thing.”

“My experience at ASMY was life changing. My name is Lisa Jacobs and I currently have a growing massage practice in Asheville. I graduated in the Spring of 2008, but it feels like an entire lifetime ago! Not only will you learn ALL those muscles and pathologies, but also grace, self-care and awareness. ASMY’s curriculum is extremely well rounded, with an inspiring and wise staff. They give you all the tools you need for the trade, plus help you discover those that you didn’t know you had.”
In gratitude,
Lisa
